NHRC demands govt. to take effective measures to reduce fire related incidents

Kathmandu, April 29: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the government to take effective steps to reduce fire related incidents.

A press statement issued here on Monday by Commission Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel urges the government to take necessary measures to ensure safety tools used to control fire incident, training, preparedness and security.

It has also urged the concerned authorities to publish and broadcast awareness-related contents through the media. Incidents of fire and wildfire have been taking place at different places of the country since last few days, resulting in huge loss of properties and lives.

The Commission has been monitoring such incidents through different mediums, it has said. Fire had destroyed 100 houses at Matihani municipality-6 of Mahottari district on April 24 where 455 people were affected.

A person died and four others were injured in a fire that took place at 49 places and forest fire at 48 places of different districts of the country in last 24 hours.

According to the Commission, fourteen people were killed in fire and eight in wildfire in last one month. “Fire and forest fire has direct role in air pollution. Nepal is in the list of most polluted countries of the world in recent years. Fire and wildfire have been considered as the major causes behind it”, reads the statement.
