No agreement on China’s Global Security Initiative (GSI), says Foreign Secretary

Foreign Secretary Amrit Rai

Kathmandu, Sept 4: Nepal has once again clarified that it has not signed or agreed to the China-proposed Global Security Initiative (GSI).

Amid rising debate, the government urged the public and political stakeholders not to rely on misleading reports that claimed Nepal endorsed the GSI during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, China, on August 30, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

Speaking to Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai stated, “The government is firmly committed to Nepal’s non-aligned foreign policy. I request all stakeholders to refrain from making comments on such sensitive foreign policy matters without proper understanding.”

Rai further explained that while GSI and other bilateral, regional, and international issues were discussed during the high-level meeting, no formal agreement was signed.

The controversy intensified after Chinese Foreign Ministry statements suggested Nepal’s support for GSI. This led to lawmakers—both from the ruling coalition and the opposition—raising concerns in the House of Representatives (HoR) on Wednesday. They demanded official clarification from the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Nepal’s position.

Nepal has long adhered to a non-aligned foreign policy, balancing its ties with both neighbors, China and India, while engaging with the wider international community. #nepal #GSI #china rss
