Chitwan : Central member of the Nepali Congress, Dr Ramsharan Mahat, has said people are for the rule of law. People elected those who advocated and abided by the rule of law, he said during a programme organized here to congratulate the new ward chairperson elected in the recent by-election in Chitwan.

Leader Dr Mahat not only claimed that people voted for NC because the NC corrected its past mistakes while government caused despair among them. “Now, people have seen NC potential political power,” he stressed.

On the occasion, Chief Whip Balkrishna Khand viewed that at a time when the country had the communist government of two-thirds majority, people favoured Nepali Congress for protection and strengthening of democracy.

He accused the existing government of weakening democratic values, adding, “Human rights, democracy, press freedom are endangered now.”

The recent by-election had elected Amrit Raj Hamal as Chairperson of Bharatpur Metropolis Ward No 16, Dev Bahadur Basnet as Chairperson of Khairahani Municipality Ward No 4 and Pratima Karki Basnet as Chairperson of Khairahani Municipality Ward No 5. They were honoured at the programme.
