Kathmandu, July 12: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has failed the floor test in the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) today.
Speaker Devraj Ghimire announced that the proposal presented by PM Dahal in accordance with Article 100 (2) of the constitution for the trust vote was rejected by a majority of the voters present in the meeting.
Of the total 258 HoR members participating in the trust vote, PM Dahal was able to secure only 63 votes, while 194 HoR members voted against him and one member stayed neutral.
The political parties voting in his favour were CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Swatantra Party, and CPN (Unified Socialist), while those voting against him were Nepali Congress, CPN UML, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, Janata Samajbadi Party and others.
With the PM’s failure to secure confidence motion, process for the new government would begin as per constitution.
Earlier, the ruling partner UML had withdrawn its support to the government, which prompted PM Dahal to undergo the floor test today.
The next meeting of the House of Representative will be held coming Sunday.
Meanwhile, in response to lawmakers’ queries on his proposal for trust vote, PM Dahal made it clear that the proposal was made not on impulse and emotion. He added that he decided to face the floor test after realizing numerous obstacles.
