Kathmandu, April 23: Municipal police from Kathmandu Metropolitan City have begun issuing public announcements in the Thapathali squatter settlement, urging residents to vacate the area immediately.
Authorities used loudspeakers to warn that the settlement must be cleared starting from 6:00 am on April 24.
On Thursday evening, teams from the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force Nepal reached the site and asked residents to leave within the stipulated timeframe.
Officials said the announcements are intended to ensure that residents are informed and can vacate the area before the deadline.
Prior to the announcement, a meeting of security agencies in Kathmandu District was held under the leadership of Chief District Officer to coordinate the clean-up campaign.
After assuming charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Prime Minister Balendra Shah directed police chiefs to launch and expedite a clean-up drive in slum areas along Kathmandu’s rivers, particularly the Bagmati River corridors in the first phase.
Thousands of people currently reside in these slum settlements. During his tenure as Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Shah had attempted to remove settlements from riverbanks but had said he did not receive adequate support from the federal government at the time. #nepal #squatters
