Kathmandu: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has returned the Bill on Nepal Citizenship to the House of Representatives (HoR) with her message that a review was needed on the issue of citizenship.
In a press statement issued this evening, Spokesperson at the Office of the President Sagar Acharya said the bill prepared to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2063 and submitted before the President for the certification as per the Article 113 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal after the endorsement from the Speaker is returned to the HoR from the President along with a message for reconsideration from the Federal Parliament as per the Article 113 (3) of the Constitution.
A section of society was demanding to return the Bill to the House citing the Citizenship Bill was very generous to women who marry with the Nepali citizen.
However, the government appears adamant to introduce the Bill in the current parliament (Upper and Lower Houses) again, and pass the Bill with majority. According to the Constitution, the President cannot reject or send back the Bill to the Parliament second time.
