Provision for compulsory labour from people’s representatives

Kalikot, July 23: The Palanta rural municipality has required its people’s representatives and civil servants to contribute their voluntary labour for a day in a month in the public works.

The rural municipality in Kalikot district of Karnali province brought this policy in its policies and programmes for fiscal year 2024-025. The local level said this policy has been brought to promoting social goodwill and unity in carrying out public works for the construction of education, health, drinking water, road, pond, irrigation, resting places, sanitation infrastructures in the rural municipality.

The policy states that the public employees, teachers and people’s representatives will have to compulsorily contribute their voluntary labour in public works on the first Friday of each month, said the Rural Municipality Chairman Indra Bahadur Rokaya.

According to him, this policy will contribute to the local development activities like construction of rural roads, drainage, bridges, retaining walls, etc. He argued that they brought this policy also to promoting the culture of contributing one’s voluntary labour for the cause of development of one’s community and place.
