Kalikot, May 17: A rare Red Panda has been spotted in the Tilagufa area of Kalikot district, raising hopes among conservationists and local communities about improving biodiversity in the region. The endangered animal was seen in the Rudubanchu area of the Red Panda Conservation Forest in Tilagufa Municipality–10.
Known for its reddish fur, black legs and white face, the red panda is a protected species found mainly in Nepal’s Himalayan and high hill regions. Locals believe the forests and natural environment of Tilagufa provide a suitable habitat for the species.
According to local resident Dhirendra Thapa, wildlife activity in the forest area has increased in recent years, with red pandas occasionally being seen near settlements and community forests. The sighting has generated excitement among locals, who have also stressed the importance of strengthening conservation efforts to protect the species and its habitat.
Environmental conservationists described the sighting as a positive sign for biodiversity and urged local governments and concerned agencies to intensify efforts to prevent poaching and deforestation.
Tilagufa Municipality, along with Mahawai Rural Municipality and Shubha Kalika Rural Municipality, is considered an important red panda conservation zone in Kalikot district. Local communities say red pandas are also found in other parts of the district, where conservation awareness programmes are being conducted by local organisations.
Red Panda Network and HURENDEC Nepal have been jointly working in Kalikot to promote community awareness on red panda conservation and habitat protection. District coordinator of HURENDEC Nepal, Dilip Kumar Shahi, said conservation activities are ongoing across the three local levels, while residents from other areas have also reported sightings of red pandas.
The red panda, which primarily inhabits cool bamboo forests, is listed as an endangered species in Nepal and is considered vital for maintaining ecological balance. #Nepal
