Surkhet, March 16: Minister for Social Development of Karnali Province, Ghanashyam Bhandari, has highlighted the increasing risks faced by the Raute community due to climate change.
Speaking at a program on “Impact of Climate Change on the Raute Community”, organized by DPNet Nepal in coordination with the provincial government in Birendranagar, Surkhet, Minister Bhandari emphasized the urgent need for all stakeholders to take action in protecting this endangered community from the adverse effects of climate change.
He pointed out that, despite being recognized as a unique indigenous group in Nepal, the traditional skills and artistry of the Raute people remain underutilized. “There is a need to showcase and market Raute-made wooden crafts like Kosi and Madhus while preserving and passing on their cultural heritage,” he said.
Additionally, he called for serious efforts to address issues such as substance abuse among the Raute community, urging action to prevent addiction to smoking, tobacco, and alcohol.
Minister Bhandari also stressed the importance of improving access to healthcare and education for the Rautes. He revealed that the provincial government has formulated a plan to systematically document the Raute language and scripts, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
“Moving forward, we will implement planned initiatives to safeguard the Raute culture and improve their quality of life,” he concluded. #nepal #society #raute
