KATHMANDU: With the decreasing cases of the coronavirus infections in the Kathmandu valley, the schools in the Kathmandu district are likely to resume gradually from next week.

The schools with the coordination of concerned agencies are preparing to run direct classes concluding that long time closure of the schools would have severe impacts on student’s learning process.

The schools are also under pressure to reopen as the online classes, and radio and TV-based alternative classes did not turn effective.

Officer of Education Department in Kathmandu Metropolitan Office Moti Bhattarai said that schools could be gradually opened by applying measures for public health.

He said that the higher graders could be asked to attend schools for three to four hours a day without using school buses.
In Kathmandu, 43,000 students are studying in 92 community and 110,000 students in 645 institutional schools.

The COVID-19 crisis management committee has also recommended the council of ministers to reopen different sectors including schools in the changing context.

Some of the schools in Bhaktapur and Lalitpur districts have already started their classes even amid the coronavirus infection.

However, Spokesperson at the Ministry of Education Dipak Sharma said that decision of the Council of Ministers was needed to compulsorily open the schools adding that the ministry’s procedure has already offered a basis to run schools with the coordination of local levels.

Similarly, the public health experts have warned not to get hurried to resume the schools.
