Kathmandu, Aug 24: Phurba Gyaltsen Sherpa has been elected as the President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), the umbrella organization of mountain tourism entrepreneurs. According to the vote count completed this morning, Sherpa defeated his opponent Kul Bahadur Gurung.
Phurba is from the Khumbu region, home to Everest and many of Nepal’s iconic peaks, and runs Heli Everest.
The Election Committee reported that Sherpa received 342 votes, while Gurung secured 288 votes.
Similarly, Ishwari Paudel has been elected as the Senior Vice President, Mingma Gyabu Sherpa as the First Vice President, Bodhraj Bhandari as the Second Vice President, and Rajendra Lama as the General Secretary.
Chandan Thapa has been elected as the Secretary. For the position of Treasurer, Ngima Nurbu Sherpa and Sumi Lama received equal votes.
The elected members of the executive committee are Madhav Kumar Dhamala, Kedar Neupane, Thupten Sherpa, Gokul Thapa, Mulal Gurung, Dendi Sherpa, Bikram Karki, Rinje Sherpa, Devendra Dangol, Nima Dickey Sherpa, and Nisha Bhote, as announced by the Election Committee. #nepal #NMA
