KATHMANDU: Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota has said that chaos has been created in the country as the government has arbitrarily deceived the parliament and appointed people to constitutional bodies ignoring norms of constitution.

After filing a writ petion at the Supreme Court on Friday, he said, “I have continued and will continue to make every effort to ensure that the government does not violate the constitutional provisions, which is based on the struggle, blood and sweat of the greatest children of Nepali mothers.”

Speaker Sapkota has also appealed for the support of intellectuals, media persons, civil society and the general public in defense of the constitution in this difficult situation.

Stating that he had reached the Supreme Court to defend the constitution, Speaker Sapkota clarified that this KP Oli government had forcibly violated the constitution and appointed various persons unconstitutionally and unilaterally.

The Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had already appointed on various Constitutional bodies by introducing a separate ordinance on Constitutional Council Act in which a decision can be made on the basis of majority. With the amendment, the government did not seek support from Speaker and leader of main opposition party.

Previously, the decisions were carried out with the consensus, but now the appointees were selected through majority.

The six-member constitutional council comprises of Prime Minister (Chairperson), and members as Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Chairman of National Assembly, Chief Justice and leader of main opposition party.
