Kathmandu, Oct 31: The Supreme Court has sought a written response within 15 days regarding the Sushila Karki government’s decision to suspend the passports and impose travel restrictions outside the Kathmandu Valley on former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and others.
A single bench of justice Nripadhwaj Niraula issued a show cause order after a preliminary hearing on the writ petition filed concerning the matter.
The writ petition was filed by advocate Dr. Prem Raj Silwal on October 28. The petition demanded the annulment of what it described as illegal decisions, orders, and letters issued against the petitioners — including CPN UML Chairman and former Prime Minister Oli and former Home Minister Lekhak — and sought an interim order to protect their constitutional and legal rights. However, the court did not issue an interim order.
The government had decided to restrict the movement and suspend the passports of the five individuals based on the recommendation of the Probe Commission formed to investigate the incidents of September 8 and 9, a violent Gen Z demonstration and killing of students.
The Commission had recommended passport suspension for former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, then Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi, then Chief of the National Investigation Department Huta Raj Thapa, and then Chief District Officer of Kathmandu Chhabi Rijal. #nepal #supremecourt #genz
