Teachers, police persons, a journalist totaling 26 injured in demonstration

Kathmandu, April 27: Twenty-six persons, including teachers, police persons and a journalist, were injured during a teacher’s protest in the federal capital on Sunday.

A clash erupted after the agitating teachers broke the security barricade and tried to enter the restricted area at New Banewshwor, the place locating federal parliament building.

The school teachers gathered in thousands from across the country and staging protest in the Kathmandu streets turned irate, thereby breaching security demarcation. It resulted into injuries among five police persons, one journalist and 20 teachers.

Information on number of injury was shared by Superintendent of Police, Apil Raj Bohara, Spokesperson at Kathmandu Police Range. The injured ones are receiving treatment at different hospitals in the Kathmandu Valley. The police persons had to use water cannons to disperse the agitated teachers.

A reporter with Prime Television, Sabina Karki, received serious injury in her right eye with shot of water cannon the security person used to tame irate teachers. Despite repeated requests by the government that their demands would be addressed, the school teachers have continued protesting for over three weeks and demanding formulation of a new school education act.

Even after the country adopted federalism having three-tiers of government which already saw two rounds of elections, the school education is still run by the hoary law- introduced in the party-less panchayat system. The teachers’ unions and associations have argued that government shirked the implementation of agreements they had signed three times previously.

In the parliament meeting, the lawmakers have voiced for the immediate address of the genuine demands of the teachers.#nepal #teacher #rss
