Thirty-nine schools in KMC adopt names reflecting Nepali identity



Kathmandu, Dec 19: A total of 39 schools in Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) have changed their names this year to better reflect Nepali identity and heritage.

According to the Metropolitan City Education Department, the name changes were implemented in response to a directive issued by KMC last year, with the objective of promoting Nepali cultural identity within the education system.

Keshav Gyawali, Acting Head of the Metropolitan City Education Department, stated that KMC currently oversees a total of 784 educational institutions. These include 26 basic schools, 58 secondary schools, four special schools, 23 alternative schools, 11 religious schools, 28 community learning centres, and 425 institutional schools.

In a related development, KMC announced that 30,779 students from schools under its jurisdiction were awarded scholarships during the academic session 2081 BS. Following the implementation of KMC’s scholarship system, 5,895 female students received general scholarships, 1,322 Dalit students were granted Dalit scholarships, and 455 students benefited from scholarships allocated for students with disabilities and those enrolled in residential programmes.

Gyawali further noted that in institutional schools, 19,306 students from grades 1 to 10 and 3,801 students from grades 11 and 12 received scholarship support.

For the current fiscal year, KMC has allocated a budget of Rs 3,294,777,000 for the education sector. Of this amount, 53.8 percent—equivalent to Rs 1,773,442,000—has already been spent.

Similarly, NPR 1,04,85,27,000 was allocated for internal regular education programmes, of which 30 percent, or Rs 315,605,000, has been utilised. Under the ‘Education for All, Metropolitan’s Wish’ initiative, only Rs 51.66 million, or 8.4 percent, has been spent out of the allocated Rs 600 million. Additionally, Rs 43.2 million, or 38.8 percent, has been expended from the Rs 111.4 million earmarked for golden plans in the education sector. #nepal #school #kmc
