Chitwan, Dec 11: A tiger census is scheduled to commence in Chitwan National Park (CNP) on December 16. The census will also be carried out in three other national parks: Banke, Bardiya, and Shuklaphanta. The three-month survey is conducted once every four years.
According to CNP Information Officer Abinash Thapa Magar, enumerators will receive orientation training on December 16–17.
Participants will include CNP staff, technical experts from the National Trust for Nature Conservation, local volunteers, students, and various conservation partners. Approximately 150 personnel will be mobilised for the census.
Magar stated that 900 grids have been demarcated across the two wildlife reserves, with each grid covering two square kilometres.
For the census, the reserves will be divided into three sections. Cameras will be installed in each section for a period of 20 days, with each section comprising 300 grids. One camera will be deployed per grid for 20 days. Technicians will set up temporary camps in the areas between the grids to carry out the monitoring work.
In the previous tiger census conducted in 2022, Nepal recorded a total of 335 adult tigers. Of these, 128 were counted in Chitwan National Park, 125 in Bardiya National Park, 25 in Banke National Park, 41 in Parsa National Park, and 36 in Shuklaphanta National Park.
Magar further noted that preparations are underway to conduct a rhino census following the completion of the tiger census. #nepal #tiger #CNP
