Govt committed to concluding transitional justice: PM Oli

Kathmandu, March 27: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to successfully concluding the work of Nepal’s two transitional justice commissions.

Speaking at a national conference on transitional justice, jointly organized by the Accountability Watch Committee and the Conflict Victims’ Organization in the federal capital today, PM Oli emphasized that the previous commissions’ work would be rigorously reviewed. He stressed the need for all stakeholders to remain vigilant and dedicated to achieving tangible results.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the transitional justice bill was passed by the federal parliament through consensus, aiming to conclude the peace process and ensure justice and reparation for conflict victims. He noted that another recommendation committee was formed, following agreement among top leaders of major parties, to select members for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission on Enforced Disappearances.

“All Nepalis want to heal from the wounds of conflict. We have moved past violence—let us not repeat such actions. Justice for conflict victims must be ensured,” he said, while expressing regret that the peace process remained unresolved even after 18 years. He urged all parties to work seriously toward its conclusion, vowing action against those violating human rights.

PM Oli also remarked, “There is no need to commemorate the armed conflict as a ceremony or declare a public holiday—such acts only deepen the victims’ suffering.” Stressing the importance of international support in finalizing Nepal’s transitional justice process, he stated that the country was striving to find a unique solution to the issue.

Additionally, he cautioned against unnecessarily linking unrelated matters to transitional justice. “Transitional justice and the dismissal of government employees are entirely different issues,” he clarified.

Reaffirming Nepal’s commitment to the federal democratic republic, PM Oli asserted that the country could not backtrack on a system established through the people’s struggle and sacrifice.

Former Prime Ministers and key political leaders, including Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ were also present at the event. #nepal #transitionaljustice
