USAID seeks strong partnership with Nepal on strengthening transparency



Kathmandu, Dec 1: Assistant Administrator of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Michael Schiffer has said that USAID Nepal is committed to supporting a more effective, participatory, and equitable democratic ecosystem.

During his meeting with Foreign Minister NP Saud and Chief Secretary Baikuntha Aryal on Friday, Mr Schiffer reinforced the U.S. government’s commitment to further strengthen Nepal’s transparency and accountability mechanisms and recognized Nepal’s democratic progress, including potential membership in the Open Government Partnership.

According to USAID Nepal, he has said, “We are proud to partner with the government of Nepal to advance good governance and promote transparency and accountability. Together, we can build a more prosperous and just Nepal for all.”

Assistant Administrator of the Bureau for Asia, Mr Schiffer is now in Nepal visit for the review of works in Nepal.

Earlier, Schiffer discussed Nepal’s energy sector with Nepal Electricity Authority’s MD Kulman Ghising at the Load Dispatch Center, a key facility in real-time power management. USAID Nepal’s active engagement with NEA aims to strengthen Nepal’s long-term energy resilience.

USAID’s Urja Nepal works towards providing clean, affordable power for all Nepalis, partnering with experts, investors, and regulators to enhance grid stability and increase clean energy generation in Nepal and the region. Urja Nepal will mobilize $1.8 billion in energy investments, bringing 1,100 MW of clean electricity online, reducing future greenhouse gas emissions by over 30 million tons.

This partnership is a testament to USAID’s commitment to working with the government of Nepal to meet the needs of its citizens. By helping to provide clean and reliable energy, we are helping to create a more prosperous and sustainable future for Nepal.
