Westerly system brings rain and snowfall to Western Nepal

Kathmandu, Jan 27: A westerly low-pressure system that entered western Nepal this evening has triggered rainfall and snowfall across several districts.

According to Barun Paudel, senior meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, rain has begun in Baitadi, Darchula, and Chandhani–Dodhara, while snowfall has been reported in Dolpa and Humla. The system is expected to gradually shift eastward, bringing further precipitation to western parts of the country.

Paudel said skies will remain cloudy nationwide from Wednesday morning, with Kathmandu Valley likely to receive light to moderate rain. As the system moves east, Koshi and Madhesh provinces are expected to face comparatively lower impact.

In the past hour, Darchula and Baitadi recorded 0.8 millimeters of rainfall.

According to the Department’s evening weather bulletin, mostly cloudy conditions are expected tonight in the high-hilly and mountainous regions of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, while the remaining hilly and Terai regions will remain partly cloudy.

Moderate rain and snowfall are likely at many places in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, with light rain or snowfall possible at a few locations in other high-hilly and Himalayan areas. Heavy snowfall may occur at one or two places in the highlands of Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim. Thunder and lightning are also possible at a few places in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

On Wednesday afternoon, mostly cloudy conditions are expected in the high-hilly and mountainous regions, while generally cloudy skies will prevail in the remaining hilly and Terai areas. Moderate rain and snowfall may occur at a few places in higher elevations, along with moderate rainfall in parts of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces. Light rain is possible at a few places in the hilly regions of Bagmati, Madhesh, and Koshi provinces, and at one or two places in the Terai of Koshi.

By Wednesday night, partly cloudy conditions are forecast for the hilly and Himalayan regions, with mainly fair weather elsewhere. Light rain or snowfall may occur at one or two places in the high-hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.

On Thursday afternoon, fog and mist are likely at many places in the Terai. Partly cloudy conditions are expected in the high-hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki, while most other areas will see mainly fair weather. Light rain or snowfall may occur at one or two places in the higher elevations. During the night, mist is likely at a few places in the Terai, while mainly fair weather is expected across the country, with partly cloudy skies in Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces.#Nepal #weather
