Surkhet, June 19: The 46th National Athletics Championship, 2083, commenced today in Birendranagar, Surkhet.
The championship was inaugurated by Rajeev Bikram Shah, who also serves as the Central Chairperson of the Nepal Athletics Association. The event is being organized by the Nepal Athletics Association in coordination with the Karnali Province Sports Development Council.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Shah highlighted that a national-level athletics championship was being held in Karnali Province for the first time, with the broader objective of developing the region into a sports hub.
He emphasized that sports play a vital role in economic prosperity, social development, and tourism promotion. According to him, Karnali possesses significant potential to contribute to Nepal’s recognition at both national and international levels through sports. He described the hosting of a national championship in the geographically remote province as a matter of pride for the nation.
The championship features 28 events for both men’s and women’s categories. Teams representing all seven provinces, along with the Nepali Army, Tribhuvan Army Club, APF Club, and Nepal Police Club, are participating in the competition.
A total of 240 athletes—120 men and 120 women—are competing for 28 gold medals.
On the opening day, Rajan Rokaya of the Nepali Army and Santoshi Shrestha of Bagmati Province secured first place in the 10-kilometre race.
Winners in each event will receive a cash prize of Rs 15,000 along with a trophy, medal, and certificate. #nepal
