Kathmandu, Nov 17: A total of 77 individuals have applied for the positions in the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. These two commissions, which are responsible for transitional justice, are currently without officials.
According to the selection committee formed to recommend appointments for the positions of chairman and members in these commissions, applications had been accepted until Friday evening, with 77 individuals submitting their applications.
According to sources, 71 applications were submitted physically, while 6 were submitted online by Saturday. Sources indicate that around half a dozen individuals have applied for the chairmanship position, with some applicants applying for both the chairman and member positions.
The selection committee had issued a public notice on Kartik 23 inviting applications for the vacant positions, which have been unfilled since the Nepali month of Srawan, 2079 BS. Although the original deadline was set for seven days, it was later extended by an additional five days. As a result, the final deadline for submitting applications is 5:00 PM on Mangsir 4, 2081 BS.
Given that the deadline has not yet passed, it is expected that the number of applicants may increase. After the deadline, a short list of applicants will be published. Based on their proposed work plans, the committee will recommend names for appointment, which will then be submitted through the Ministry of Law to the Council of Ministers for approval.
The recommendation committee, formed on Kartik 2, is required to submit its recommendations within two months. Therefore, the final recommendations should be made by Poush 2, 2081 BS.
The selection committee includes Manoj Dhawadi, a commissioner from the National Human Rights Commission, former Ambassador to the USA Arjun Bahadur Karki, Stella Tamang, founding president of the Indigenous Women’s Federation, and former Attorney General Khamba Bahadur Khati as members. #TRC #nepal
