80 dead, five persons missing in flood, landslides in this monsoon

Kathmandu, July 9: A total of 80 persons have died due to floods, landslides and other monsoon-related hazards so far in this monsoon season, the Nepal Police said.

One person died in the Kathmandu Valley while 19 in Koshi Province, three in Madhes Province, four in Bagmati, 22 in Gandaki, 20 in Lumbini, four in Karnali and seven in Sudurpaschim Province due to disaster-related incidents, said Spokesperson of the Nepal Police, Deputy Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki.

Likewise, five persons are still missing in the disasters and 97 others were injured. The police said that a search for the missing is ongoing and the injured are receiving treatment at local hospitals. The police said that 53 persons were rescued.

Of the injured, three were injured in Kathmandu Valley, 21 in Koshi Province, five in Madhes, four in Bagmati province, 26 in Gandaki Province, four in Lumbini Province, 15 in Karnali Province and 10 in Sudurpaschim Province.

A total of 161 houses were inundated and 138 houses, 54 sheds, 41 bridges, a school and two government offices suffered damages due to flood.

So far, 2,764 families have been displaced by disaster-related incidents during the period.

Activities were underway to shift the families of different districts who are at risk of floods to safer location, local authorities have said.
