KATHMANDU: Garbage management has become one of the most contentious issue for newly elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Kathmandu Metropolis. Garbage piles can be seen everywhere in the city squares, streets and main roads.

The new leadership of the metropolis has become more focused on this issue as the anger over the inability of the metropolis to manage the garbage is spreading. Chief of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Balendra Sah and Deputy Chief Sunita Dangol have reached Sisdol to discuss waste management.

The locals at Sisdol have been protesting against the Kathmandu Metropolis and the federal government, and they have obstructed the smooth operation of dumping site there.

After meeting with Urban Development Minister Ram Kumari Jhankri, Deputy Chief Dangol said that they went to Sisdol to study the problems of the locals and infrastructure development.

Earlier, Chief Sah had gone to Sisdol after winning the election. At the time, Sah said government initiatives and efforts in sustainable waste management were extremely risky and ignored. This is the first time that Chief Sah and Deputy Chief Dangol have reached Sisdol together.

The residents of Sisdol have been agitating from time to time saying that they are facing many problems due to the dumping site.

After hearing the problems and complaints of the locals, Mayor Sah assured to take immediate measures to remove the odor by keeping chemicals.

Mentioning that it takes a week to get rid of the odor after applying the chemical, he said, “It can be made odorless in a week. Chemicals have to come here again.”

He also announced plans to install another system to make manure from garbage and extract gas by drilling. He said that it may take three to four months to complete all these works.

He also said that arrangements would be made to separate and dispose of perishable and non-perishable garbage and to raise public awareness for that.

Local people’s representatives and civic leaders complained that they had been repressed by the police administration, demanding that they be allowed to live in a healthy environment. As human beings and garbage cannot live in the same place, they demanded proper management of garbage or locals.
