Kathmandu: The squatters and landless people of Thapathali have protested at the office of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City today and demanded the resignation of Mayor Balendra Shah.
The protesters were holding placard which read as ‘Balen Shah should resign’. They were also demanding for proper management of the squatters.
The protestors raised slogans like ‘Stop dozer terror’, ‘Manage with proper alternatives’. The Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee had repeatedly issued notices to vacate the squatter settlements along the Bagmati river bank. However, after they failed, the metropolis, in coordination with the committee, started demolishing the settlement with dozer and city police.
After the metropolis ran a dozer in the slum area, the situation became tense when there was a clash between the two sides. According to sources, some city police were severely beaten and got injured.
Mayor Balendra Shah has termed the last incident as ‘terrorism’, and central government was doing nothing in this case.
