Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has awarded Sanu Sherpa, the first person to doubly summit the 14 highest mountains in the world above 8,000 metres above the sea level (also colloquially known as eight thousanders).
Sherpa, who hails from Makalu rural municipality in Sakhuwasabha district, was awarded for introducing Nepal in the world by such audacious mountaineering feat.
It may be noted that of 14 mountains above 8,000 metres across the world, Nepal is home to eight mountains.
In honour of record-holder Sherpa, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Jeevan Ram Shrestha, awarded Sherpa with Rs 70,730 cash prize that is equivalent to a monthly remuneration of Minister Shrestha.
“The mountaineering feat of Sherpa is inspirational for mountaineers of this generation and it would also positively impact mountain tourism of Nepal in the world,” lauded Minister Shrestha.
The Ministry had also awarded Sherpa recently on the 43rd World Tourism Day.
Similarly, Nepal Mountaineering Association President Nima Nuru Sherpa commented that the Nepali media had given less priority to mountaineering related matters.RSS
