Global consensus needed to tackle climate change: NA Chair Dahal

Kathmandu, June 5: National Assembly (NA) Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal emphasized on practical implementation along with common commitment to tackle the problems created due to climate change.
Addressing a programme ‘Waste Management and Climate Conference’ organized on the occasion of the World Environment Day here today, NA Chairperson Dahal stressed that ensuring a clean environment by managing waste which , he said, was a challenge.
“A clean environment is needed to tackle the climate change created problems,” he argued. Stating that water, air and climate were universal thing, he called for global consensus to deal with climate crisis.
Claiming that the impoverished ones, women and marginalized communities were at highest risk of climate change related problems, the NA Chairperson spoke of the need to be more aware on time as Nepal is a country at high risk of climate change.
He called for securing more support from the Climate Fund rightfully to address natural calamities, sharing that climate change was adversely impacting agriculture, food, human health, energy, drinking water thereby making livelihood more difficult.
The NA Chair explained that there was no alternative to adopting environment-friendly development practices for climate actions.
He viewed that modern methods should be implemented for processing waste, underlining that Nepal should easily receive relief grant from the Climate Fund to tackle climate-change related problems.
Chair Dahal drew government’s attention to pay special attention for environment conservation by promoting greenery.
Similarly, former Minister for Forest and Environment Birendra Mahato underscored the need of cooperation from the Nepali people to minimize the effects induced by climate change.
Stating that the effects of climate change were visible generally, he argued that unnecessary expenses being incurred in the name of climate change should be controlled and the climate fund should be utilized in the real sector.
Likewise, National Human Rights Commission’s member Mihir Thakur echoed with NA Chairperson Dahal and said that latest technology should be used for effective waste management.
Experts on waste management and climate change from Nepal and India are participating in the event. On the occasion, a book named ‘ABC for Climate’ was launched with an objective of sensitizing people about climate change.
