NC, UML alliance not targeted against other political parties, Deuba says

Kathmandu, Aug 20: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the recent understanding forged between the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN (UML) was not targeted against any other political party but was for moving ahead with the democratic exercises.

At a programme organized by School of Democracy on the second memorial day of socialist thinker Pradeep Giri, Deuba said on Tuesday that the two major political parties came together to make the socialism-oriented constitution a success which was drafted on the basis of pluralism.

“The two-party consensus was made to advance the nation. It would be wrong to construe this agreement as against them by certain political parties. The agreement signed between the two major parties is not kept secret. We have made it public,” Deuba said.

The former prime minister stressed that the constitution should be amended to resolve the issues that have arisen in the course of its implementation.

Also speaking at the event CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal recalled late Giri’s contributions in accelerating the top leaders of different parties to opt for a democratic republic by snubbing the then king’s address to the nation during the time of the People’s Movement-II.

Likewise, CPN (UML) general secretary Shankar Pokharel said that the future generation will remember Pradeep Giri as a socialist thinker of Nepal.

Also speaking at the event, CPN (Maoist Centre) leader Shakti Bahadur Basnet said leader Pradeep Giri remained popular among all political parties due to his image as a political thinker.

Leader of Loktantrik Samajwadi Party Dr Surendra Jha and Nepali Congress central leader Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, late Gri’s spouse Bharati Silwal Giri, NC leader Nainsingh Mahar and other speakers recalled late Giri’s contributions to Nepal’s political and socialist movement.
