
Kathmandu, Mar 10: President Ramchandra Paudel has said it is necessary for countries like Nepal that have no role in climate change that the issue of climate justice is raised in every international forum.
The Head of State said this while inaugurating the 11th Nepal Geological Congress organized by the Nepal Geological Society here today. He said the topic of climate change should be taken to the international community.
According to the President, it is necessary to raise the issue of climate justice vociferously in the context of developing and least developed countries like Nepal that have no role at all in bringing about climate change also being affected due to the rampant industrialization, exploitation of fossil fuels and carbon emission by the developed world.
Stating that the importance of the Congress has been enhanced by burning issues like the urgent need of minimizing the impact of climate change and natural disasters and their minimization, President Paudel stressed on cooperation and collaboration for addressing these types of issues directly concerned with the life of people.
He said, “There has been an unusual increase in global warming, he expressed concern over rapid melting of snow turning most of the mountains bare and the huge loss of life and property from excessive rainfall, landslide and soil erosion every year since last three decades.”
The President further said earthquake occurring in mountain areas time and again has become a problem in development construction of Nepal, expressing that though some natural disaster could be predicted, problem has surfaced due to inability to invent a mechanism that could predict earthquake.
He expressed the belief that there would be discussion about status of Nepal’s mines and mineral products, the state of exploration, climate change and its impact and use of geology in physical infrastructure development.
President Paudel shared that the Congress would be useful to attract investors for exploration, utilization and market management of natural resources. “The congress organized on the eve of one decade of the Gorkha earthquake, has special importance. I wish for success of this congress,” he mentioned.
The 11th Nepal Geological Congress organized by Nepal Geological Society, has kicked off in Kathmandu from today. President Ramchandra Paudel inaugurated the two-day congress.
Discussion would be held among geologists of various countries of the world regarding earth’s safety in the congress, it is said.
The conference was organized with an objective of highlighting the role of geology in climate change adaptation, use of natural resources and geo-risk management and exchanging new researches, technologies and experiences of geology sector.
Society Chairperson Churna Bahadur Wali shared that the congress would help exchange knowledge about climate change impacts, natural resources management and disaster management.
“The adverse impact of climate change has been increasing. There will be collaboration for identifying the problems and operation of climate adaptation and reduction programme to resolve the problems,” he added.
Geologists of Nepal, India, China, USA, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, South Korea, Japan, Bangladesh and Pakistan have been participating in the congress.
More than 100 working papers on geology of the Himalayan region would be presented and extensive discussion would be held on geological studies and research, said Coordinator of the Congress, Professor Khum Narayan Poudel. The Congress is organized in every two years. #nepal #geology
