Kathmandu, Nov 28: Bangladesh has agreed to purchase an additional 20 MW of electricity from Nepal.
The seventh meeting of the Energy Secretary–Level Nepal–Bangladesh Joint Steering Committee on Energy, held on Thursday, reached an agreement to complete the necessary processes to export an extra 20 MW of electricity, in addition to the existing 40 MW currently being supplied.
According to Sandeep Kumar Dev, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, the agreement to export additional energy was reached following the required technical assessments.
The meeting, convened in Dhaka, Bangladesh, saw participation from Nepal’s Energy Secretary Chiranjibi Chataut, while Farzana Mamtaz, Secretary at the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, represented the Bangladeshi side.
The committee reviewed the recommendations outlined during the Joint Action Committee meeting held on November 26 (Wednesday). Spokesperson Dev informed that six agendas were discussed during the steering committee meeting.
Both sides agreed to complete their internal procedures and sign a memorandum of understanding on promoting renewable energy and enhancing energy efficiency.
As part of the cooperation, Bangladesh will extend technical assistance to Nepal in areas such as energy testing, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and rooftop solar systems.
Similarly, capacity-building programmes between the two countries will also be advanced.
It may be recalled that the secretary-level mechanism (steering committee) has been working toward expanding the energy sector, facilitating power trade, and sharing experiences related to sectoral development. #nepal #bangladesh #powertrade
