Kathmandu, Dec 5: The government has invested Rs 930.88 billion in the form of shares and loan in 159 different public corporations and bodies till fiscal year 2024/25.
As per the Annual Report of Share and Loan Investment of the Government of Nepal released by the Public Debt Management Office, the government has invested Rs 404.81 billion in 116 corporations as shares till fiscal year 2024/25.
The Nepal Electricity Authority, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Nepal Telecom, Rastriya Banijya Bank and Agricultural Development Bank are the highest share invested entities.
Similarly, the government has invested total Rs 526.6 billion loan till the last fiscal year. Of them, Rs 158.18 billion was invested from internal sources and Rs 367.88 billion from external sources, according to the Office.
The most loan invested entities are Nepal Electricity Authority, Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board, CAAN and Nepal Water Supply Corporation.
The report states that the government received Rs 2 billion 622 million 994 thousand and 695 towards return of the principal and Rs 5 billion 290 million 430 thousand and 365 towards interest recovery.
Similarly, a total investment of Rs 41 billion 480 million 422 thousand and 247, including Rs 5 billion 526 million 334 thousand and 549 in shares and Rs 35 billion 959 million 787 thousand and 698 towards loans, has been made in the last fiscal year alone.
Despite significant government investment in various corporations and entities, the returns appear to be weak. Entities with loans and share investments have gradually increased the liabilities as they fail to pay interest to the government on time.
The report stated, “As of the fiscal year 2024/25, the overdue principal amount is Rs 259 billion 199 billion 703 thousand and 126 and the overdue interest is Rs 140 billion 882 million 396 thousand and 169, making the total overdue amount Rs 400 billion 82 million 99 thousand and 295.”
