Amid controversy, Minister Ghising finally resigns

Kathmandu, Jan 7: Minister Kulman Ghising, who was overseeing three ministries including Energy, has finally tendered his resignation amid mounting controversy.

Prime Minister Sushila Karki had asked for his resignation during a recent cabinet meeting. She had also sought resignations from two other ministers — Communication Minister Jagdish Kharel and Youth and Sports Minister Bablu Gupta.

At a programme held in the capital on Tuesday, a young participant questioned Minister Ghising about whether he had joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). In response, Ghising briefly mentioned, “I am not affiliated with any political party.”

For several days, criticism had been growing on social media platform and other media, with allegations that Ghising was openly involved in party activities, in violation of the principles of new government under Sushila Karki. There were increasing calls for his immediate removal.

After the Ujyaalo Nepal Party, of which Ghising was a patron, formally merged into the Rastriya Swatantra Party, he was appointed vice-chairperson of the RSP, ranking second after party chair Rabi Lamichhane.

Although Ghising has claimed notable achievements in development and infrastructure projects during his tenure, he has been unable to remain free from controversy.

He is preparing to contest the upcoming general election, scheduled for March 5, from Kathmandu Constituency No. 3, and has already been actively engaged in election campaigning in the area.

Ghising has also faced widespread criticism for allegedly using ministerial resources to conduct party activities across the country.

Following the Gen Z movement on September 8 and 9, 2025, which led to the ouster of the then government, a so-called “citizens’ government” was formed under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki.

As ministers in the non-partisan government became increasingly involved in party politics, Prime Minister Karki herself demanded their resignations. Minister Ghising’s resignation today marks the first step in that process. #kulman #nepal #genz
