Bamdev Gautam free from constitutional hurdles

Kathmandu: The Supreme Court has decided not to continue the interim order in the case of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leader and Vice Chairman Bamdev Gautam.

A five-judge constitutional bench, including the chief justice, ruled that the interim order should not be continued.

Earlier, a single bench had asked Gautam not to take constitutional responsibilities. The order barred him from becoming a minister.

After this new order of the Supreme Court, he can become a minister or take any senior posts as a member of parliament.

The government had recommended Gautam for the member of Upper House. With the recommendation of the Cabinet, the President had nominated Gautam for the member of parliament. But a case file was lodged against Gautam arguing that he had lost election from Bardiya.

According to party sources, Mr Gautam may take a senior portfolio in the KP-led Cabinet.
