Kathmandu, Nov 13: Bir Hospital, the country’s oldest medical institution, has started conducting simultaneous tests for multiple respiratory viruses through its Medical Genetics Laboratory.
According to Dr. Nilam Thakur, Chief of the Department of Medical Genetics, the new facility enables testing for 10 different respiratory-related viruses at once, marking a major step forward in diagnostic efficiency. The advancement is expected to reduce testing costs and facilitate early detection and treatment.
Dr. Thakur added that the hospital is also prepared to provide comprehensive treatment for conditions identified through these tests.
Although the laboratory was originally established in 2073 BS, its full operation had been delayed due to a shortage of equipment and skilled manpower. At present, only three personnel are managing the lab. It remains the first government-run facility in Nepal to offer genetic health testing services.
In addition, Bir Hospital has also begun simultaneous testing for six viruses linked to brain infections, according to hospital officials. #nepal #health #BirHospital #virus
