Biratnagar, June 27: Birat Medical College in Biratnagar has launched the service to supply irradiated blood, which is said to be for the first time in the country.
Such blood is specially prepared by exposing it to a precise dose of radiation to inactivate donor T-lymphocytes. It is prescribed for cancer patients, during organ transplant, for organ transplant patients, and those with severe health complications.
According to blood transfusion expert Dr Bipin Nepal, such blood plays a vital role in the treatment of these cases.
When a patient receives normal blood, the donor’s blood cells may consider the patient’s body cells as different. As a result, they begin attacking the recipient’s body, causing severe complications. Blood irradiation eliminates this risk by inactivating T-lymphocytes, Dr Nepal said.
Blood cancer specialist and hematologist Dr Bikash Kumar Shah said irradiated blood is beneficial for patients with various blood disorders and blood cancers, patients undergoing bone marrow and kidney transplant and those with congenital immune deficiencies.
The hospital hopes that the launch of this service will significantly benefit patients from eastern Nepal who require irradiated blood. #nepal #rss
