KATHMANDU, Nov 30: A committee at the Ministry of Home Affairs has recommended to promote Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Bishwaraj Pokharel to the post of Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Nepal Police.
A meeting of the promotion committee chaired by Home Secretary Maheshwar Neupane on Monday evening recommended to promote Pokhrel to AIG.
At the same time, after the retirement of the current IGP Shailesh Thapa Chhetri, he will become the sole claimant to become the Inspector General (IGP). Chhetri’s tenure is till upto 19 Baishak 2079 BS.
A relative of Deputy Prime Minister Ishwor Pokhrel, Bishwaraj was lucky to get promotion as a single candidate for the post of AIGP. Even, the government had added the post of AIG in the first week of November without even informing Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’.
The Police Headquarters is dissatisfied with the recommendation saying that a single promotion from Pokhrel’s batch in AIGP will degrade the work performance of others. But under the pressure of Deputy Prime Minister Pokharel, IGP Shailesh Chhetri has also become helpless, says an official at the Police Headquarters.
Along with Pokhrel, Sahakul Thapa and Dhiraj Pratap Singh of his batch were also considered as contenders for the post. However, with the government’s single promotion of Pokhrel, the possibility of others to become IGP of Nepal Police has been ruled out.
