Kathmandu, April 25: Authorities on Friday used bulldozers to demolish structures in a squatter settlement along the Bagmati River in Thapathali.
The action was taken as part of a long-disputed effort to clear the land. As bulldozers arrived in the settlement, residents began removing their belongings early in the morning.
The administration has maintained that government land must be cleared in accordance with the law. However, residents have been demanding proper rehabilitation before any eviction takes place.
A heavy security presence has been deployed in the area. Tensions mounted after Kathmandu administration issued a notice addressing the local residents to evict by themselves or they will use force. Even, Prime Minister Balen Shah vowed to clear the area and suggested for cooperation on finding real and fake landless people.
Different political parties have requested the Balen government to reconsider the demolition houses of landless people before giving them credible resettlement plan. But it seems that the government was not ready to listen their plea. #Nepal
