Civil society protests continue against government

KATHMANDU: People from different sections of the society have protested against the dissolution of the House of Representatives on Sunday at Shifal, Kathmandu.

Personalities from different walks of life protested against the dissolution of the House of Representatives through their art and creations.

The movement, dubbed the ‘Great Civil Movement Against Regression’, was attended by writers, journalists, professors, musicians, students and civil society leaders.

Poetry recitals and musical performances were also held in the program. On the occassion, educationist Kedar Bhakta Mathema said that the government should stop interfering in the constitutional bodies. He said that the government should not interfere in any state body including universities. The government should be committed to federalism and socialism as well.

Writer Khagendra Sangraula said that the essence of the civil movement was not only to restore the parliament and protect the constitution but also to amend the constitution. He said that they have a demand to rewrite the constitution if needed.

Cartoons and placards related to the current political environment were also displayed in the program.

Civil society leaders and rights-based organizations have been continuously voicing anger over the dissolution of the Parliament at a time of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had earlier dissolved the HoR after ruling NCP leaders struggled to capture power, particularly to remove the PM KP Sharma Oli from the post of Prime Minister.
