KATHMANDU: The main opposition party, CPN-UML, has demanded that the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JBR be forwarded to the impeachment recommendation committee of the Federal Parliament for discussion.

The UML representatives who participated in the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday have demanded to send the impeachment motion to the recommendation committee.

CPN UML whip Shanta Chaudhary and MP Khagraj Adhikari in the impeachment committee have requested to send the motion against the Chief Justice to the impeachment recommendation committee.

In the meeting, the UML representatives had demanded that the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee should be given to the main opposition.

The impeachment motion against Chief Justice JBR was registered by the ruling Congress, Maoist Center and CPN (Unified Socialist) MPs at the Federal Parliament Secretariat.

Following the impeachment of the Chief Justice, the House of Representatives formed an impeachment recommendation committee in the third week of March. UML members Bishnu Poudel, Lal Babu Pandit, Shivamaya Tumbahamphe and Krishna Bhakta Pokharel are members of the committee.

Similarly, Min Bahadur BK and Ram Bahadur Bista of the Nepali Congress, Yashoda Subedi and Rekha Sharma of the Maoist Center are members. Likewise, Kalyani Khadka from the Unified Socialists, Pramod Sah from the JSP and Ekwal Miah from the LSP are members.

According to the Parliament Secretariat, the committee has met only once so far. The work could not move forward as no impeachment motion was tabled at the meeting. Chief Justice JBR is suspended. The allegations against JBR have not been investigated and debated in the committee.

Some have accused the government of pursuing a strategy of sending Chief Justice JBR home without a discussion in parliament.
