Kathmandu, July 6: Deputy Speaker Indira Ranamagar has said role of Yogmaya, the precursor of women movement, is incomparable not only in Nepal’s history but across the globe.
During a programme on ‘Yogmaya Memorial Day’ organized by the National Women Commission in the federal capital on Sunday, Deputy Speaker Ranamagar reminded that Yogmaya’s courage and social movement she launched despite autocratic Rana regime is inspirational to the present generation.
“Speaking and writing freely, and making association could not be imagined in Rana era. But Yogmaya spearheaded the social reform for women’s rights and empowerment,” she said, adding that present generation can learn a lot from her for realizing women’s rights.
Ranamagar further said we are in need of launching public awareness with door-to-door campaign for effective enforcement of laws so that violence, injustice and discrimination against women would cease to exist in Nepali society.
The social transformation and women empowerment launched by Yogmaya is still relevant. Equal participation of women in all structures of State is imperative, she underlined.
National Assembly member Jayanti Devi Rai seconded Deputy Speaker that Yogmaya had played a vital role in social and religious reform. She had also worked for ending class and caste discriminations in Nepali society, according to her.
Yogmaya was a reformist woman, launching a movement in an eastern district of Nepal during autocratic Rana time. Long ignored or pushed on the back burner, her movement and its significance are gradually coming to light in Nepali society and polity after major literary works lately, thereby prompting the right activists to invoke Yogmaya as the foundational figure of women’s rights movement.#nepal #political #rss
