Dowry issue, attempted murder by setting wife on fire in Dhanusha

Janakpurdham, April 22: An incident has come to light that a Dhanusha resident tried to kill wife by setting her on fire for not giving dowry.

According to local police, Janakpurdham sub-metropolitan ward number-20, Devpura Rupaitha’s 28-year-old Shweta Jha’s body was set on fire by her husband Rajiv Jha and other family members. Shweta, who was undergoing treatment at a provincial hospital in Janakpurdham, accused her husband Rajiv of trying to kill her by setting fire to her body with the help of other family members.

Shweta said that her husband Rajiv, father-in-law Shivshankar Jha, mother-in-law and brother-in-law tried to kill her by beating and setting her body on fire. Shweta has alleged that Rajiv was beating his 9-year-old son on Baisakh 1st while he was trying to save her. He also beat Shweta and set her body on fire with the help of brother, father and mother.

She said that Rajiv’s family beat her to death and set her body on fire, but they did not even bring her to the hospital for treatment till now.

After learning about the incident, Shweta’s father Jayakumar Jha, brother and other relatives from Darbhanga, India, admitted her to the provincial hospital in Janakpur. Shweta’s body is burned nearly 35 percent, below the neck.

She said, “It has been 10 years since the marriage, they have been beating me since the past saying that they have not paid the 3 tolas of gold accepted as dowry, and now they have tried to kill me by setting fire.”

Shweta, who was injured, said that her husband Rajiv and her father-in-law asked for 3 tolas of gold during the wedding. At that time, the father had given 2 lakh Indian rupees, but he has not given 3 tolas of gold, but he has accused him of harassing her time and time again. Shweta told that after the marriage, her father was continuously supporting Rajiv and his family financially.
