Gagan Thapa stresses on effectiveness of health insurance programme

Kathmandu, Nov 27: Lawmaker Gagan Kumar Thapa has underlined the need of broader commitment to make the government-launched health insurance programme more effective.

In his address to an interaction organised by the Nepal Medical Association here on Monday, the former Health Minister expressed his concerns over the potential failure of the programme.

Thapa who is credited with initiating the proramme said it was implemented in a bid to promote the citizen’s right to healthcare services ensured by the Constitution. As he said, the programme has not been the priority of a high political leadership.

The Nepali Congress (NC) leader pressed an idea of amending the insurance-related laws to enhance the effectiveness of the scheme.

Lawmaker Prakash Panth was of the view that the effective implementation of the programme would help promoting the citizen’s constitutional right to health care services. Pointing out the need of reforms in Nepal’s health service and the system, he said investments in the health sector should take place through a one-door approach.

Finance Ministry’s joint-secretary Uttar Kumar Khatri stated the budget for the current fiscal accorded priority to the health sector and they are working to further systematize the insurance programme and basic healthcare facilities for citizens.
