Kathmandu, Aug 29: The government of Nepal has appointed Chandrakuber Khapung as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the top post of Nepal Police.
Sources at the Prime Minister’s Office informed that Friday’s cabinet meeting decided to appoint him as the IGP effective from the September 4, 2025.
Current IGP Deepak Thapa will retire at midnight on the September 3. Since Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is leaving for a visit to China on Saturday, the Cabinet meeting held before his departure finalized the appointment of the 32nd IGP of Nepal Police.
Khapung is currently serving as the Chief of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).
If a new Police Act is issued during his tenure, his service term will be extended by six months under the current provision. Otherwise, he will also have to compulsorily retire at midnight on 26 Kartik upon completing his 30 years of service.
