Govt introduce minimum support price guidelines to protect farmers

Gita Chaudhary

Kathmandu, May 1: The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has introduced new guidelines to determine the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and minimum purchase price for key agricultural products.

Minister Gita Chaudhary unveiled the Guidelines on Determination of Minimum Support Price and Minimum Purchase Price, 2082, aimed at ensuring farmers receive timely price information and fair returns.

Under the new provisions, farmers will be informed about the MSP of major crops even before the sowing season. The government will fix MSPs for staple crops such as paddy, maize, wheat, and millet.

For crops like sugarcane, the process will involve field surveys, data collection, and analytical reporting before final recommendations are made. Similarly, wheat MSP will be determined through surveys and technical assessments before approval.

Minister Chaudhary stated that the initiative will help farmers make informed decisions about crop selection, plan production more effectively, and reduce market-related risks. She also expressed confidence that the policy would encourage greater investment and boost overall agricultural productivity by assuring farmers of fair pricing.

The guidelines have been issued in accordance with Section 47(1) of the Right to Food and Food Sovereignty Act, 2075. #Nepal
