Kathmandu, July 10: The government has decided to bear the full cost of treatment for Ganesh Nepali, who sustained severe burn injuries in the incident outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor.
Currently undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital, Nepali is being prepared for transfer to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for advanced and specialized medical care.
Home Minister Sudhan Gurung and officials from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat visited Bir Hospital on Thursday evening to inquire about Nepali’s condition and expedite the treatment process. They received a briefing from the medical team on his health status and the progress of his treatment.
Following consultations with doctors and considering the seriousness of his injuries, they instructed the concerned authorities to make all necessary technical and logistical arrangements for his immediate transfer to India.
The process to airlift Nepali to AIIMS has been initiated under the direction of Prime Minister Balendra Shah, with the government pledging to cover all treatment expenses.
Mr Ganesh Nepali set himself on fire outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor after protesting the wheel-locking of his motorcycle by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Police. Following the incident, a group of demonstrators staged a protest at Maitighar, demanding justice and accountability.
Although the government has announced that it will cover Nepali’s treatment costs and arrange advanced medical care in India, it has not yet initiated any formal action or investigation into the wheel-locking incident that preceded the self-immolation.
The issue was also raised in the House of Representatives, where several lawmakers called on the government to ensure the victim receives the best possible medical treatment while also seeking accountability over the circumstances that led to the incident. #nepal
