Kathmandu, Aug 22: The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed concerned authorities to put in place mechanism to control the smuggling of poultry and poultry products from Indian border check points to Nepal.

In a meeting held at Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday, the Ministry instructed the district administration and security agencies working in the districts bordering with India to take action against those people involved in illegal transport of the poultry and poultry products from India to Nepal.

The Ministry also instructed to step up surveillance in the bordering areas and check points and remove the illegally run poultry firm, hatchery and cold stores in bordering areas.

The Ministry directed to coordinate efforts to enhance effectiveness of customs offices and quarantine facilities. The poultry entrepreneurs had recently appealed to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Narayankaji Shrestha to curb the illegal import of poultry and poultry products.

They had bemoaned that although Nepal was self-sufficient in chicken meat, they were suffering due to illegal import of poultry and poultry products.

DPM Shrestha in last Monday’s meeting had pledged to control the illegal import of poultry and poultry products even by considering an amendment in law as he had said that the smuggling would jeopardize overall economy, revenue collection and industrial climate.
