Honey production up in Lamjung



Lamjung, Jan 21: Honey output has increased in the hilly district of Lamjung. The production of honey rose by 29.6 tonnes in the district this year as compared to the previous year, the Agriculture Knowledge Centre (AKC), Lamjung said.

AKC Lamjung’s Information Officer Saroj Thapa said 129.17 tonnes of honey was produced this year from 17,197 beehives.

Farmers in the district said that they have sold honey for Rs 1,500 per kilogramme this year. According to him, farmers have earned Rs 180 million from the sale of honey this year.

Last year, 111.3 tonnes of honey was produced from 13,850 beehives. Last year, honey was sold at Rs 900 to Rs 1,000 per kg and the farmers earned more than Rs 90 million from the sale of honey, according to the Agriculture Knowledge Centre.

In 2079 BS, only 32 tonnes of honey was produced from 10,025 beehives. Thirty tonnes honey was produced from 11,500 hives in 2078 BS while it was 38 tonnes from 11,100 hives in 2077 BS.

Sundarbazar Municipality has produced the highest amount of honey this year in the district. Information Officer Thapa said that 36,000 kgs honey was produced from 4,500 beehives and Rs 54 million was earned from the sale of this quantity of honey. Honey produced in the district is supplied to Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and other markets.

Farmers in the district have started producing honey using modern beehives and technology.

Sundarbazar Municipality, Besisahar Municipality and Marsyangdi Rural Municipality are the highest honey producing municipalities in Lamjung, according to the Nepal Beekeepers’ Federation, District Branch.
