Impeachment registered against Chief Justice Rana in Parliament, signed by 98 MPs

An impeachment motion has been filed against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana. A total of 98 MPs from ruling five party coalition have filed impeachment motion against the Chief Justice in the Parliament Secretariat. It was registered at 11:10 am.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dilendra Prasad Badu and other ruling party lawmakers had reached the Parliament Secretariat with the impeachment motion.

According to a senior official of the secretariat, the lawmakers met Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota with the signatures of 98 lawmakers on Sunday morning.

MPs including Pushpa Bhusal, Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Dev Gurung and Gagan Thapal have reached the Parliament Secretariat with the impeachment motion. However, it’s not clear about the parliamentarians from main opposition CPN UML party.

According to Jeevanram Shrestha, the impeachment motion was signed by 38 members of the Congress, 42 members of the CPN (Maoists Center) and 17 members of the CPN (Unified Socialists).

“An impeachment motion against Chief Justice Rana has been registered in parliament,” said Shridhar Neupane, a press expert to Speaker Sapkota.

According to Constitutional provisions, the impeachment motion need two-thirds majority in the House. Without the main opposition, the impeachment motion cannot be passed from the parliament. However, Chief Justice Rana will no longer can perform his daily work at the Supreme Court, and will be suspended from the post.

The ruling party coalition has filed a 21-point indictment against the chief justice. MPs have accused the Chief Justice of being incapable of upholding democracy, human rights, the rule of law, constitutional supremacy and an independent, impartial and accountable judiciary.

Similarly, it has been alleged that during his tenure in the Supreme Court, there has been a lot of perversion and corruption and intermediaries have entered.

The Nepal Bar Association (NBA) has been demanding the immediate resignation from the post.
