Kathmandu, July 23: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)’s Country Representative for Nepal, Ken Shimizu, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Gauri Kumari Yadav.
In the meeting held at the ministry today, discussions were held between them about branding local products produced in different geographical areas of Nepal and making the branding sustainable.
On the occasion, Minister Yadav informed that the ministry has started the initiative to draft necessary laws for the protection and promotion of local products of Nepal.
The FAO Country Representative for Nepal drew the minister’s attention, expressing that although the GI system has been implemented in most countries around the world, it has not yet been brought into use in Nepal.
He pointed out that since the local products don’t have GI registration, valuable brands are being registered by other countries, and Nepal has to face the direct loss.
He emphasized that a law should be made and implemented immediately to stop this. #nepal #rss
