Sunsari, July 6: Locals have been urged to remain alert following continuous rise in water level in the Saptakoshi River following incessant rain.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Sunsari, Nabin Krishna Bhandari informed that 303,860 cusecs of water was flowing through Koshi barrage this evening. At present, 39 sluice gates of the barrage have been opened.
The flow of water is constantly increasing here. As of 4.00 am today, 124,465 cusecs of water was flowing, 244,000 cusecs at 1.00 pm and 282,680 cusecs per second at 5.00 pm.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhandari said security surveillance has been increased at the Koshi Barrage with the rise in the water level and current.
Water level in Narayani River goes above danger point
Likewise, Narayani River has crossed the danger mark following incessant rainfall. The water level in Devghat was measured at 9.8 meters at 4.45 pm today.
It is considered warning level when water current crosses seven meters and danger level is considered when water current exceeds nine meters in the river.
According to chief of the flood forecasting section Sunil Pokharel, a message has been sent to the residents of the area around the Narayani River since this afternoon to remain alert.
Pokharel informed that a message has been sent to around 100,000 people urging them to adopt safety alert. “It’s raining continuously. The water level of the river has crossed the danger level in the day. Therefore, we urge the people around the river to remain alert,” Pokharel said.
One dies, another goes missing in Dang
A person died and another one went missing in the flood occurred in Dang district. Similarly, dozens of houses have been inundated due to incessant rainfall.
Chhediram Chaudhary, 55, of Gadawa rural municipality died when the Gangdi stream swept away a tractor (Ra 1 Ta 2166) at Gadawa rural municipality-5.
Police Inspector at Area Police Office, Gadawa, Kalika Karki, said two others—tractor driver Mahesh Yadav and another one were rescued.
Similarly, Raj Kmar Yadav, 18, of Rajpur rural municipality-2, who was returning home after selling milk, went missing in the Rapti River, shared Chief of the District Police Office, Ram Bahadur KC.
Three persons including Yadav were trapped in the flood of the Rapti River. Of them, Dayaram Yadav, 40, and Tularam Yadav, 48, were rescued.
Dozens of houses at Hasnapur of Lamahi municipality-7 and Lathawa of Rapti rural municipality-5 were inundated due to torrential rainfall. Ghorahi-Tulasipur section has been obstructed after a flood in Sewar stream swept away an alternate route.
Flood sweeps away culvert, transport halts along Prithvi Highway
A culvert set up at Sheratar of Shuklagandaki-7 along the Prithvi Highway has been swept away by the flood, causing a disruption on highway traffic.
A flooded stream in the wake of incessant rainfall since Friday night carried away the drain, causing a complete halt in vehicular movement, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police at District Police Office, Dipak Kumar Ray.
Hundreds of vehicles operate along this highway. A police team left for the incident site immediately after getting the information on road disconnection, he added.
It would take time to resume the traffic.
Meanwhile, a landslip deposited at Mauriodhar of Myagde rural municipality-6 blocked the road. DSP Ray informed that it was difficult to remove the mudflow until the rain stops. “The landslip is continuous and rainfall posing threat,” he shared.
The district police has requested drivers and other concerned to maintain alertness in the highway.
One goes missing, three houses swept away in Dolakha
A person has gone missing, while three houses are swept away at Gaurishankar rural municipality-9 in Dolakha district due to flood triggered by the torrential rainfall.
Jangmu Sherpa,64, has gone missing when the flooded Rolwaling rivulet swept him away on Friday night, said chairperson of Gaurishanar-9, Nima Geli Sherpa.
Sherpa shared that they had been collecting details of loss caused by flood. The 64-year-old Sherpa of Chhotchhot Simigaun had been running a hotel at Dodang of Gaurishanar-9 for the past three decades.
Incessant rainfall disrupts flights in Mugu
Passengers have been hit hard due to disruption of air service in Mugu, Jumla and Humla districts for the past four days. The incessant rainfall halted the flights.
A local Hari Krishna Aidi said he was waiting for three days to travel to Kathmandu by plane, but finally compelled to travel by bus on Friday due to continued cancellation of flights.
He shared that he resorted to travelling by bus after there was no sign of improvement in weather. Chief of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Rara, Sri Krishna Rijal, mentioned that there was no flights from Nepalgunj for the past four days.
The possibility of air service to these districts is very low due to adverse weather today. Passengers are therefore forced to travel from the Karnali Highway, keeping their lives at risk.
Similarly, the flights have been disrupted at Simkot from Wednesday due to hostile weather, explained Chief of CAAN office, Simkot, Mahendra Bahadur Singh.
Tourists visiting the Rara, one of the most frequented tourist destinations of the country, generally reach the place after flight at Rara airport in Mugu.
Rainfall taking place all over the country
The country is experiencing rainfall due to the influence of Monsoon winds today. Most of the places in Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini are receiving light to moderate rain, while rainfall is taking place in some places of the rest of the country.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, there will be light to moderate rain in many places of all the provinces this afternoon, with possibility of heavy rain at a few places in Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.
Later tonight, the weather will be generally to completely cloudy across the country, with a possibility of light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning at some places in Koshi and Madhesh provinces and many places in the remaining provinces.
