Kathmandu, Nov 19: The floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall on October 27-28 have resulted in damage worth over 13 billion rupees in the energy and irrigation sectors.
According to a report submitted to the Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, by a committee formed through a ministerial decision, the damage caused by floods and landslides across the country affects hydropower, irrigation, embankments, and transmission lines.
The committee conducted a study on the damage to hydropower projects, both completed and under construction, transmission lines, irrigation systems, and river training works. The study found that damage to 27 completed hydropower projects and 19 ongoing projects amounted to around 6 billion rupees. Additionally, the transmission and distribution lines incurred a loss of approximately 160 million rupees, as reported by the committee’s secretary and the Ministry’s Chief Development Officer, Shaligram Bhandari.
The report also mentioned the damage to federal irrigation and river training systems, which amounted to 498 million rupees, while Bagmati Province suffered a loss of 243 million rupees. Rural electrification projects faced damages worth 20.71 million rupees.
The committee provided details of the damage and suggested measures to prevent such disasters in the future and recommended relief options for the affected projects. Minister Khadka emphasized that the Ministry would work on implementing the recommendations presented in the report.
To assess the overall damage to the electricity sector, river training, and irrigation projects, Energy Minister Khadka had earlier formed a five-member committee led by Ministry’s Undersecretary Jeevachha Mandal. The committee included officials from the Department of Electricity Development, Department of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nepal Electricity Authority, and other relevant agencies. #flood #landslide #nepal #damage
